Which baby food is best to buy at the supermarket?
We completely understand: you're standing in the supermarket with a full stroller, a half-full cart, and a head full of questions. You want the best for your little one, but that baby food aisle? A jungle of jars, pouches, and cheerful colors. What is really healthy? What should you look out for when you want to make a conscious choice for your little one? Let’s make it easy.
Check the ingredients list (not the marketing claims) Slogans like “natural,” “no added sugars,” or “full of vitamins” sound good, but the truth is in the small print. Pay particular attention to the ingredients list:
-
Is fruit or vegetables listed as the first or second ingredient? Good sign!
-
Do you see sugar, syrup, concentrate, or juice high on the list? Not such good news - these are often fast sugars your baby doesn't need.
-
Less is more. The best baby food consists of recognizable ingredients: vegetables, grains, fruit, and a healthy fat. No unpronounceable E-numbers or vague “extracts.”
Salt? Better not! Babies' kidneys are still developing, so extra salt really isn't necessary. It's better to avoid meals with more than 0.2 g of salt per 100 g.
What about age labels? You often see “from 6 months” or “from 8 months” on the packaging. That's a guideline, not a law. Instead, look at the texture (is it smooth or does it contain pieces?) and the composition (does it contain nutrients appropriate for your child's age?).
Trust your gut. As a parent, you know your child best. Does your baby enjoy classic flavors or something more adventurous? Can your little one already nibble pieces easily or not? You know better than the manufacturers.
And of course, take a look at Billiebubs too 😉 Our meals are developed with your little one in mind, without the junk and with the right nutritional balance. No added sugars, no salt, no preservatives, just pure ingredients and lots of love.
The supermarket may never become an oasis of calm (especially not with a baby in a carrier and a toddler sprinting toward the cookie aisle 😅), but with these tips, you'll be making conscious, healthy choices for your little one from now on. Because let's be honest, a happy tummy is the best start to every adventure.
